In 2020, Vasundhara Sanjivani Mandal (VSM) undertook a crucial water conservation project in Belpada, Murbad, aimed at restoring and enhancing the village’s water resources. The project focused on desilting a lake spanning 22,888 square meters, which had accumulated excessive silt over the years, reducing its storage capacity. Through extensive excavation efforts, 1,396 cubic meters of silt were removed, significantly improving the lake’s ability to retain water. This initiative was designed to strengthen the local water supply, ensuring sustainability for the village’s domestic and agricultural needs.
The successful desilting process led to a substantial increase in water storage capacity by 1,396,000 liters, directly benefiting the local community. The lake now serves as a more reliable source of water for domestic use and cattle, addressing a long-standing challenge faced by the villagers. With a total expenditure of ₹2.42 lakh, the project was efficiently executed, showcasing VSM’s commitment to rural development through water conservation. Sponsored entirely by VSM, this initiative aligns with its mission to support water security in drought-prone and water-scarce regions. By revitalizing the lake, the project not only ensures year-round water availability but also contributes to the ecological balance of the area. The Belpada desilting effort stands as a testament to how well-planned interventions can create long-term impact, improving the lives of rural communities and securing their future water needs.
