Vasundhra Sanjivani Mandal (VSM), a dedicated NGO committed to rural water conservation, undertook a crucial desilting project in Vaishakhare, Murbad, in the year 2020. The project aimed to restore the village lake, which had an area of 2,094 square meters, ensuring sustainable water availability for the local community. Over time, sediment accumulation had significantly reduced the lake’s capacity, leading to water shortages for both domestic and cattle use. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, VSM spearheaded the initiative to remove 2,160 cubic meters of silt, effectively enhancing the lake’s water storage capacity by 21,60,000 liters.
With a total expenditure of ₹1.21 lakh, the project was successfully completed. The increased water availability has provided a reliable source of water for household consumption and livestock, significantly improving the villagers’ quality of life. This initiative not only addressed immediate water scarcity but also contributed to long-term sustainability by rejuvenating the local water body. The desilting effort has ensured that the lake remains a dependable resource, especially during dry seasons.
VSM’s commitment to water conservation continues to make a lasting impact on rural communities. By undertaking such projects, the organization reinforces its mission of ensuring water security and promoting environmental sustainability. The Vaishakhare desilting project stands as a testament to VSM’s dedication to empowering villages through practical and impactful solutions.
