Swara Saanvi Check Dam at Godyachapada

Project background

Godyachapada is a small hamlet of 40 to 50 houses in village Vaishakhare, Murbad Taluka. The main occupation of the villagers is Farming on monsoon rains. Some farmers are taking 2nd Crop on Borewell water. However, these Borewells dry up in the month of January. A Water Stream ( Karkhanis Nalla)  originating from Nane Ghat passes through this hamlet. The water in the stream dries up after the monsoon, hence 2nd and 3rd crops are not possible. There were a number of Check Dams on this stream but over a period of time they are either filled with Silt or washed away as construction was of poor quality.

The farmers were willing to take 2nd and 3rd Crops but the problem was availability of water. A Check dam was located on the uppermost place on the stream. However, the Check Dam was filled with Silt and was leaking from the bottom, resulting in no water storage in the dam

Objectives

To provide water to nearby fields after monsoon season so that 2nd and 3rd Crops can be taken.

Recharging of underground aquifers by normal percolation.

Cost Benefits study

If a farmer having a field of 1 Acre cultivates his land during non-monsoon period, he can get Rs 2 Lakhs net additional income.

About 25 Acres of land will be benefited by this project. This means after 25 acres of land is cultivated by this scheme Rs 50 Lakhs will be generated which will uplift the living of the villagers.

Project Planning and Resource allocation

  • Desilting of the Check Dam.
  • Desilting the upstream till 100 meters.
  • Erecting Gabion walls on the side of the stream near the Check Dam to prevent soil erosion.

The total Cost of the project was Rs 8.86 Lakhs.

This was financed by private donors.
